I don’t know if Clarence meant anything by the title, but there’s a line in Matthew’s passion narrative that echoes it. Since we were already in gospel territory, I took it one natural step further.

He said, Oh Father let this cup pass from me
The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak
Could you not awake one hour with me?

Three times before the rooster crows
And as Jesus watched his closest friend lie

And just as Pilate washed his hands clean
he said, Not as I will, not as I will, not as I will, but just as you will.

He said, I’m thirsty, they lifted a sponge
To quench the thirst of the water who lives
And as Longinus pierced his sweet side
